Electric

Welcome to the Utilities Electric Department

The City of Fountain Utilities electric division is proud to provide electric services to approximately 18,000 metered electric accounts and supports a population of nearly 48,000 people in and around the Fountain area. The Electric Division operates and maintains just under 40 square miles of overhead and underground distribution system. Approximately two thirds of this service area is outside of City limits.

City of Fountain Utilities is a public power provider. As a community-owned, locally controlled, not-for-profit electric utility, the people of Fountain are included in making key decisions about our energy future.

The majority of our power is purchased wholesale from the Western Area Power Administration, the Public Service Company of Colorado, and Pueblo Dam Hydroelectric. A solar array serves as a source of local power generation.

Electric Service Upgrades

In order to complete an electric service upgrade, you must first obtain a permit from Pikes Peak Regional Building Department.  After this has been obtained, you contact the Utilities Department at 719-322-2092 to schedule a shut-down of electric service to complete your service upgrade operations.

In general, no. These types of operations are not completed outside of the normal operation hours of the Utilities Department. These hours are M-F, 8:00 am to 2:30 pm.  Any shutdowns completed outside of these hours must be an emergency or have prior approval from the General Foreman. A fee will be assessed for non-emergency shutdowns approved by the General Foreman outside of the normal operation hours accordingly.

The owner must run the new service line in accordance with applicable codes.

There may be additional costs associated with these upgrades that must be borne by the customer. As each upgrade is unique to each customer, costs may vary. A full breakdown of costs associated with each upgrade is provided accordingly.

We encourage the exploration of other options prior to construction, which include:

  • Exchanges a large draw electric appliance for a natural gas range or dryer to free a 30- or 50-amp breaker to handle an A/C unit or hot tub
  • Considering another type of cooling unit such as evaporative air.

Solar Energy

With an average of 245 sunny days per year, Colorado could be considered a great place to take advantage of solar energy. With the proper equipment, you can harness the benefits of this abundant resource, reduce your carbon footprint, and potentially save money on your utility bill.

Fountain Utilities makes use of a solar program known as net-metering, which allows customers with solar energy systems to receive credit on their utility bill for excess electrical energy produced and returned to the grid.

To find out if solar is the right choice for you, visit  LetsGoSolar.com

To participate in the Net-Metering Incentive Program, please fill out the Interconnection Application and Customer Generation Agreement below.

Don't be left in the dark!

If you notice a streetlight out, please contact our Utilities Department at 322-2092 to report the location of the light that is out.

Without your help we may be unaware that a streetlight is no longer operating correctly as we do not have a system that alerts us to this problem. Please remember to include the location of the light, your name and number, and if it has been a re-occurring problem.  We try to make the repairs as soon as possible if time permits. We appreciate your assistance and look forward to keeping your neighborhood safe and bright at night!

Don't flirt with danger!!

If your tree has limbs that are too close or interfere with powerlines, please contact our Utilities Department at 322-2092 for assistance.

One of our electric linemen will assess the extent of the interference and notify you of the proper course of action. To help ensure the safety of our customers there is no cost for this service. Please keep in mind that any trimming that is done by the Utilities Department is for service reliability and is not based on the cosmetic look of the tree. Should you choose to hire a tree trimming company the Utilities Department will need 24 hours’ notice to set up a time to drop the service line for the trimmers, upon completion of their trimming operations please contact us to have the service put back in place.

It is the responsibility of the customer to maintain wiring and equipment after the meter to the house. This includes underground electric service in yards with back lot line construction and overhead electric service.

Should you have tree limbs that are interfering with your secondary overhead service, the Utilities Department recommends that you contact our offices at (719) 322-2092 to have the service dropped prior to trimming those limbs.  This will ensure your safety and could save you from costly repairs if the limbs fall on the secondary service line.

Please contact our Customer Service Offices to sign up for your Electric Service by phone at 719-322-2010 or visit the Customer Service Home Page.
